Assistant Coordinator of Investigations
Fair Housing Center of Southeastern Michigan

The Fair Housing Center is seeking a committed, hard working advocate to investigate complaints of illegal housing discrimination. Job includes volunteer recruitment and training. This is a full-time grant funded position, not guaranteed beyond 36 months.

Organization
The Fair Housing Center of Southeastern Michigan is an Ann Arbor-based non profit civil rights organization working to investigate complaints of illegal discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status, age, marital status, sexual orientation, income source, and student status. We cover six counties: Washtenaw, Ingham, Jackson, Livingston, Monroe, and Lenawee. In 19 years, the Fair Housing Center has successfully resolved nearly 70 fair housing lawsuits with over $1,750,000 in settlements going to complainants, gained dozens of reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities, and conducted hundreds of fair housing tests mainly for race and familial status (children) complaints.

Job Responsibilities
The Assistant Coordinator of Investigations will include:

  1. Take complaints of illegal housing discrimination over the phone. Inform complainants of their rights under fair housing law. Make appropriate referrals to local service agencies.
  2. Work with appropriate FHC staff to advocate on behalf of complainants.
  3. Collaborate with the Coordinator of Investigations to design investigations (tests) in response to individual complaints. Supervise and implement testing assignments.
  4. Recruit new testers using a combination of outreach and education.

Required Skills
Must have the ability and desire to work with people from diverse backgrounds, excellent problem solving skills, and the ability to think creatively. Must be self directed, have good communication/interpersonal skills, and the ability to advocate on behalf of others. Applicant should have a driver’s license and access to a car.

Desired Experience
B.A. or equivalent experience in fields related to community organizing, fair housing, or civil rights. Demonstrated commitment to grassroots community work. Applicant should have volunteer experience. Experience supervising/organizing volunteers is a plus.
