Housing Advocates Training & Welfare Policy Seminar Wrapping Up
November 2, 2011
11/2/11 – Local advocates and social service workers will wrap up a training seminar in Brighton today that designed to help them gain knowledge about fair-housing laws, landlord-tenant laws and housing subsidy programs. The two day training is being co-sponsored by the Livingston Diversity Council and being held for the first time in Livingston County. Coordinator of Investigations for the Fair Housing Center of Southeastern Michigan Kristen Cuhran tells WHMI that fair housing issues are discussed including how to recognize the signs of housing discrimination, how to advocate for those who may have been a victim of housing discrimination while understanding what services are out there. Other portions of the training focused on legal services, land-lord tenant relationships, housing repairs, the eviction process and how to advocate for individual’s facing an eviction or a lock-out. Welfare policies, Department of Human Services programs such as social security and Medicare were discussed along with eligibility requirements and advocacy strategies. Cuhran says while the services are provided every year, the training is still timely because laws and regulations change. For more information about the center and its services, call 1-877-979-FAIR.
